The music in this game is kick ass, I mean I can’t believe they made that old chip do so much! If you haven’t played this game, I pity you. The thing loads up and instantly you are greeted with a heavy metal intro, an awesome fight scene, and then its done. Quick loading and right to the point - then you’re off to fight whatever you can. The music stays fairly nice through the missions with it being somewhat softer (and I think they were playing up some kind of sarcasm, because as soon as you hit the boss you are back on heavy metal). Stage 1 boss has an awesome song, perfect for the game. Recently when I downloaded the music and put on a winamp plugin I found that most the boss songs were composed by Takeshi Yoshida - so props to him for the Bosses and the opening theme - then the rest of these awesome songs were by Toshiharu Yamanishi (I got all the spellings from the game’s rom, so if anything is wrong I apologize). The favorite boss theme of mine has to be the Final Boss theme, while my favorite level would be the Stage 9 song. The stage 9 song is the best one to fight to, it’s a methodical march that leads into a great metal theme. Then it loops back to the march. If all of these were on a CD and still used the Yamaha chip to produce them I would still buy it.
They pushed the genesis to the limit with the music, and the game itself is just great. I have yet to get my hands on Thunder Force III. I will though. I will.
